Spring is here, and people across the country are spring cleaning. It’s the perfect time to tackle all those cleaning and maintenance tasks you just couldn’t bring yourself to do before. While it’s entirely possible to just wing it when spring cleaning your home, you’ll make it easier on yourself if you plan your approach. Here’s how to do it right:
Go Room by Room
Rather than tackling everything haphazardly, it’s easier to take things one room at a time. Before you start cleaning, go through each room in your house, and give it a thorough inspection. Make a list of everything that needs to be done in each room, like purging old or unused items, dusting high shelves, and cleaning the baseboards, for example. Once you have a complete list for your entire home, you can make a plan for how to approach. Don’t overload yourself on any one day; there’s no need to pressure yourself to finish all of it at once.
Start Up High
As you clean higher areas, you’ll loosen dust, which will then fall onto your furniture and floors. Because of this, it’s always a good idea to start cleaning at the top of a room and work your way down. For example, if a room has a ceiling fan, clean it before you dust any tables or other furniture. Save the floors for last, as that’s where most of the dust from up above will accumulate. This will save you from recleaning lower items as the dust settles.
Don’t Forget the Walls
While it is unlikely that you’ll forget to clean your floors and counter surfaces, you may not think about the amount of dust that accumulates on your walls. While it’s far less than on horizontal surfaces, as walls are vertical, the texture on your walls, combined with static electricity, can still attract dust. In most cases, all your walls will need is a simple wipe with a damp cloth to bring them back to their former glory.
Take Your Time
It can be tempting to rush through everything just to get it done, but that defeats the purpose of spring cleaning. This is the time to give your home a deep clean, getting into areas that you don’t normally reach in your regular efforts. Don’t rush through everything; allow yourself plenty of time to really get into the nooks and crannies.
