2018 Furniture Trends for Your Home

The new year is almost upon us, and now is the perfect time to start thinking about how you will update your home’s décor in the coming year. Here at Wickmans Furniture, we have a front-and-center view of the hottest trends in furniture. Here’s a look at what to watch out for in 2018.

Curves and Comfort

The latest furniture designs we are seeing have shifted their emphasis from ornate styling to more classic looks that put the focus on comfort. Cushions are plump and plush, delivering maximum comfort. Look for curved edges that look great in any room in your home. Fringe is also making a comeback, giving a look that is at the same time rustic and elegant.

A Shift Away from Minimalism

Although the minimalist look has been popular in the past, the current shift incorporates a “more is more” mentality. Feel free to pile on accessories and accents to make the most of this style. Plants, either live or synthetic, can and should be placed throughout your home. Combine different types of plants within the same area for an eclectic look that makes your home come alive.

Earth tones are incredibly popular right now, including terra cotta, rust and shades of tan. Aim to use a mix of these shades so that the look doesn't end up too plain. If you prefer a more traditional style, these hues will be easy to incorporate.

Geometric Shapes

The structural look is back in a big way, so watch for furniture that is angular and sculptural. This style is ideal for dining areas, giving modern appeal to these often-traditional rooms. Structured furniture looks great with metallic accents, so include chrome or brass in your design scheme. Striped patterns can help to create a geometric look for curvy furniture, like sofas and ottomans.

Earthy Color Palettes

Earth tones are incredibly popular right now, including terracotta, rust and shades of tan. Aim to use a mix of these shades so that the look doesn’t end up too plain. If you prefer a more traditional style, these hues will be easy to incorporate. For more contemporary décor, use these colors on sculptural, geometric furniture as described in the previous section. If you don’t want to go fully rustic, try using Earth tones as accent colors against a neutral background instead.

Artistic Wallpaper

If you think of fussy patterns when you picture wallpaper, think again. Today’s modern wallpapers are more akin to mural art than the wallpapers of the past. Abstract designs and watercolor looks are popular in this category at the moment, so think of your wallpaper as art. There are so many options to choose from that you should have no problem finding a wallpaper to complement your furnishings.
