There’s something wonderful about walking into a local store and knowing that any dollar you spend in that location goes directly back into your community. This is the basis of Small Business Saturday, and it’s coming up this year on Saturday, November 25, 2017. Even if you shop at major retailers or online on a regular basis, take the time to visit somewhere new in your community. Who knows — you might find your new favorite store! There are plenty of ways that you can participate, as local retailers go above and beyond to make the day fun and to earn your business for the rest of the year.
Why Support Small Businesses?
Small businesses are the lifeblood of America. The vast majority of people work for what are technically small businesses — businesses which employ fewer than 500 people. While you may hear more about large corporations, they employ less than 50 percent of workers throughout the country. The millions of individuals who own or work in a small business have seen their market share shrink over the years, as multi-national corporations continue to cut costs and also cut into the profit base of local organizations. The Small Business Administration, the government arm that supports and regulates small businesses, has supported Small Business Saturday since American Express launched the promotion in 2010. Each year, the event grows in size and scale with millions of dollars spent on this Saturday after Thanksgiving every year.
How Small Businesses Support the Community
There are a variety of ways that small business owners help boost the local economy, which makes it a smart move to help support them not just on Small Business Saturday, but throughout the year. Ever wondered who sponsors Little League teams, donates to community charity events or donates to local shelters or supports the chamber of commerce? Those same small business owners who need your support are pillars of the local community, providing not only goods and services but leadership that could be lacking if they were no longer in business. If that’s not a good enough reason to shop local, think about the additional tax dollars that local businesses bring into the area, as well as the additional jobs that would not be available if the businesses didn’t exist.
