How to Prepare Your Home for the Holidays

How to Prepare Your Home for the Holidays

If you’re hosting one of the many winter holidays in your home this year, you want your guests to have a jolly old time. By comparing your home to your party plans, you may find your place begging for some changes as the season approaches. Follow these tips to make your guests as comfortable as possible as they share the fall and winter joy with you.

Shutter the Clutter or Get Rid of It

Preparing for a full house presents a great incentive to divest yourself of useless clutter. Go through each room, starting with the common areas, and round up all the items of which you can dispose of or should move to its proper home. Throw out stuff that is junk and donate items which still have value but you no longer use. For those things which you need but have never assigned a permanent home, obtain some attractive storage chests, sideboards or freestanding closets to tuck them away.

Plan for Extra Coats

If your family coat closet already bursts with winter gear, think about bringing in a coat rack for your guests to use. With coats hanging near the door, you won’t have to parade everyone to a bedroom to dump possibly wet coverings. Hooks on the wall near the doors can accomplish the same goal without taking up floor space.

Many people move their worn out beds to guest rooms, but the holiday spirit requires that your overnight visitors receive a better place to sleep. Replace the hard, lumpy mattresses and beat-up headboards with something your guests will love. A good guest bed will make for pleasant people come morning.

Provide Enough Furniture for Seating and Eating

Meal times can challenge even the most organized host. You can use a lightweight, folding table and round up odd chairs and stools for seating. However, think about replacing your tiny dining table with an expandable table and add a few chairs. Also, benches can seat more people in the same space at the table. Once you move to the living room, the benches, chairs, and stools can come too. Consider replacing worn old couches and chairs with a new set or a sectional sofa where many guests can relax all at once.

Buy Beds Your Overnight Guests Can Appreciate
